Most people use AI the same way they'd use a search engine — type a few words, hope for the best. It works, sort of. You get something. But "something" is rarely what you actually needed.
The difference between a mediocre AI output and a genuinely useful one almost always comes down to the prompt. Not the AI model. Not your subscription tier. The prompt.

Why Most Prompts Fail
Bad prompts share three problems: they're vague, they lack context, and they set no constraints on the output. When you write "write a blog post about marketing," you're leaving hundreds of decisions to the AI — and the AI will make them as generically as possible, because it has no reason to do otherwise.
The AI doesn't know your audience. It doesn't know your tone. It doesn't know whether you want 500 words or 2,000. So it guesses. And its guesses are statistically average — because that's what language models are trained to produce.

The Role Assignment Technique
The single most impactful change you can make to any prompt is adding a role at the start. Instead of asking the AI to do something, you tell it who to be first.
Before: "Write a cold email for my software product."
After: "You are a B2B sales strategist who has written outbound campaigns generating millions in pipeline. Write a cold email from [YOUR NAME, ROLE] to a [RECIPIENT TITLE] at a [COMPANY TYPE]."
Why does this work? Because the role assignment activates a completely different set of patterns in the model. "B2B sales strategist with a track record" has very different associations than a blank slate. The AI draws on everything in its training that matches that role — the style, the vocabulary, the structure, the instincts.
Role assignments work best when they're specific. "Marketing expert" is weak. "Performance marketer who manages $1M+ monthly ad spend on Google and Meta" is strong. The more concrete the expertise, the better the output.
The Five Elements of a Great Prompt
Every high-quality prompt contains some combination of these five elements:
1. Role
Who the AI is. Not just a job title — a specific expert with a track record. "You are a senior React developer who writes clean, accessible, production-ready code" is far more useful than "you are a developer."
2. Task
What you need done. Be specific. "Write a product description" is a task. "Write a 100-word product description for [PRODUCT] targeting [AUDIENCE], leading with the transformation not the specs" is a much better task.
3. Context
The variables that make your situation unique. Who is the audience? What platform is this for? What has already been tried? What constraints exist? The more relevant context you provide, the less the AI has to guess — and the better it guesses when it does.
4. Rules
What the output must and must not do. Rules are where most prompts leave the most value on the table. Examples of powerful rules:
- "Under 150 words"
- "Banned words: game-changing, revolutionary, synergy, best-in-class"
- "Open with a question, not a statement"
- "Every bullet point must contain a specific number or example"
Rules create the constraints that force creative quality. A painter with unlimited canvas produces sprawl. A painter with a postcard-sized canvas produces precision.
5. Output Format
Exactly what you want back. Should the response be a numbered list? A paragraph? A table? Should it include headers? Should it give you three options to choose from? Specifying the format saves a round-trip of "now format it differently."
Before and After: Real Examples
Example 1: Social Media Caption
Weak prompt: "Write an Instagram caption about our new product launch."
Strong prompt: "You are a social media copywriter for a DTC skincare brand. Write an Instagram caption announcing the launch of our new hyaluronic serum for [TARGET AUDIENCE: women 25–40 interested in clean beauty]. Tone: warm, confident, science-backed but not clinical. Hook in the first line. Under 150 words. End with a CTA asking them to tap the link in bio. Banned: 'game-changer', 'revolutionary', excessive exclamation marks."
The second prompt produces something you can actually use. The first produces something you'll spend 20 minutes rewriting.
Example 2: Code Review
Weak prompt: "Review my code."
Strong prompt: "You are a senior engineer with 10 years of Python experience. Review the following code for: 1) Security vulnerabilities, 2) Performance issues, 3) Readability. For each issue found: severity (critical/high/medium/low), the specific line, what an attacker or future developer would encounter, and the corrected version. Also note what is done well."
The structured output request in the second prompt means you get an organised, actionable review instead of a paragraph of vague feedback.
Advanced Technique: The Pre-Mortem Prompt
Before writing any complex prompt, ask the AI to critique the brief itself: "Here is what I'm trying to achieve: [GOAL]. What information would you need to do this excellently, and what are the most likely ways the output could go wrong?"
This surfaces gaps in your brief before you've committed to a direction. It's the equivalent of asking a contractor what they'd need to know before they quoted a job — you find out upfront what's missing, rather than discovering it when the output doesn't match your vision.
The Constraint Paradox
The counterintuitive truth about prompting is that more constraints produce better creative output, not worse. When you tell the AI "write anything," it writes the most statistically average thing. When you tell it "write a cold email under 100 words, opening line must be about the recipient not you, no 'I hope this email finds you well', CTA must be a yes/no question," you get something genuinely useful.
Constraints are not limitations on creativity. They are the forcing function that produces it.
Iteration is the Point
No prompt gets it perfectly right on the first attempt, and that's fine. The real skill is in the follow-up: "Good, but make the opening more direct," or "Keep the structure but use a more conversational tone," or "Give me version 2 where the hook is a question instead of a statement."
Think of prompting as a conversation with a very knowledgeable colleague who needs clear direction. Your first message sets the parameters. Each follow-up sharpens the result.
